On the week of 11th December 2023 APT enjoyed the visit of five Sonatrach employees to our microscopy laboratory in Conwy, North Wales.

The visitors included two who came for enhanced familiarisation of the process of kerogen isolation and mounting / polishing for reflected and transmitted light studies and three engineers for development of their microscopy skills.

The training was provided by our Consultant Microscopist Rick Harding supported by Djamel Boutoutaou from Pangea Geochemistry Services and Emma Straughan, APT UK petroleum geochemist. The laboratory support was provided by Mr Mark Rogers, laboratory manager for Petrostrat Limited.

Their visit to Conwy coincided with the monthly GeoScience Wales cluster meeting at the Royal Cambrian Academy Art Gallery which fortuitously was given this month by Professor David Harper, Chair of the International Commission on Palaeontology. He spoke very eloquently on his speciality, the Ordovician system and the multiple facies variations observed at many localities across the Ordovician globe where he has been able to identify and record the variations relating to depositional settings. It was particularly interesting to know that the Ordovician is represented at the top of the world (Everest)! The talk was of particular interest to our guests since the Ordovician is well represented at outcrop and in the subsurface of Algeria.
